What is a Land Trust
A land trust is generally a private, nonprofit corporation organized to protect land for its natural, recreational, scenic, historical or productive values, according to the Land Trust Alliance, a national organization dedicated to advancing the conservation of land resources.
The Georgia Piedmont Land Trust (GPLT) is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that acquires and stewards fee simple and conservation easement land donations to achieve one or more conservation purposes. The conservation purposes we protect include:
- Natural Habitat
- Water Quality (Watersheds, Wetlands & Mitigation Banks)
- Working Lands (Farm & Forestry)
- Woodlands
Historic Lands (Battlefields)
- Open Space and Scenic Values
- Community Greenspaces
As a qualified and accredited land trust GPLT must:
- Comply with IRS criteria for land preservation.
- Operate according to accepted practices and standards as established by the Land Trust Alliance for conservation and stewardship.

Our focus is to ensure that green and open space in northern Georgia provides the ecological benefits essential for healthy communities and a high quality of life for their citizens by:
- Permanently preserving land in the northern regions of Georgia to
protect the quality of our waters and woodlands
- Complementing the conservation efforts of cities and citizens
- Saving farmland and historic sites for communities to enjoy now
and for generations to come.
